Caverject Injection
Caverject Impulse Kit (Alprostadil) is a prescription injectable medicine for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
This kit works by enabling more blood to flow into the shaft by relaxing the blood vessels and smooth muscles of the penis. An erection is caused when excess blood becomes trapped in the lacunar spaces of the penis.
How to Inject Caverject
Your healthcare practitioner will provide you with instructions and training during your first injection. The initial injection will take place at the doctor’s office to determine the proper drug dosage.
Never modify the dosage of Caverject without consulting your doctor beforehand.
This medication is administered intravenously (directly into the penis) 5 to 20 minutes prior to sexual engagement. A 1-hour long erection should result after the injection. It should not be used more than 3 times a week.
Make sure you wash your hands with soap and water and place the bottles on a clean surface before drawing the medicine into the syringe. You should also use an alcohol swab to clean the caps of the injection vials. Do not use the alcohol swab to clean the needle.
Caverject Dosage
This comes in single-dose vials with 20 mcg or 40 mcg of alprostadil.
It should be dosed individually for each patient after a thorough titration under the guidance of a physician. In general, the lowest effective dosage should be used at all times.
Caverject Before and After
Caverject intracavernosal injection resulted in an erection sufficient enough for sexual intercourse in over 80% of participants in clinical tests.
How long does Caverject Last
This medicine generally takes 5 to 10 minutes to start working. After taking this medicine, you should try intercourse within 10 to 30 minutes. After ejaculation, an erection may persist, but it should not be firm or remain more than 1 hour.
Caverject Side Effects
Common:
- Mild pain in penis, urethra, or testicles
- Penis redness
- Warmth and burning in urethra
Serious:
- Feeling lightheaded
- Bleeding after injection
- Painful erection for 4 hours or more
- New and/or worsening pain in the penis
- Penis changes: redness, swelling, lumps, tenderness, unusual curving or shape
This drug might cause serious adverse effects. If you have any significant side effects, contact your doctor immediately, or dial 911 or your local emergency number. These aren’t the only adverse effects that come with it. Other, perhaps more rare side effects should be discussed with your doctor and pharmacist. Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor about any allergies you have, medications you are taking, and any previous medical history you have.
