Indications
- This medication is utilized to treat bacterial ear infections, targeting middle ear infections in children with ear tubes and outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear) in both children and adults.
- It combines ciprofloxacin, a quinolone-type antibiotic, and dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid.
- The ear drops function by inhibiting bacterial growth and reducing ear swelling and discomfort.
- It is specifically effective against bacterial ear infections and does not treat other types of ear infections.
- Caution against unnecessary use or overuse of the antibiotic to prevent decreased effectiveness.
Dosage and administration
- Before using this medication, read the Patient Information Leaflet and Instructions for Use from your pharmacist. Seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
- Apply the medication in the infected ear as directed by your doctor, typically twice daily (every 12 hours). Use it only in the ear and avoid using it in the eyes. Ensure the ear canal is clean and dry before application.
- To ensure accurate dosing and prevent ear contact with the dropper, if possible, have another person administer the drops. To reduce the risk of dizziness, warm the container in your hand for a few minutes.
- Wash your hands before applying ear drops. Avoid contamination by not touching the dropper tip or letting it touch your ear or any other surface. Shake the container well before use.
- For middle ear infections in children with ear tubes, the child should lie down with the treated ear upward. Hold the dropper directly over the ear, place the prescribed drops, and gently press the cartilage to facilitate the medicine’s passage through the tube. Keep the head tilted or insert a soft cotton plug if directed.
- For outer ear infections, the patient should lie down with the treated ear upward. Hold the dropper over the ear, place the prescribed drops, and for adults, pull the earlobe up and back, while for children, gently pull the earlobe down and back. Keep the head tilted or insert a soft cotton plug if directed.
- Repeat the steps for the other ear if directed. Do not rinse the dropper; replace the cap after use.
- Use the medication regularly at the same times each day for maximum benefit. Continue the full prescribed duration even if symptoms improve. Stopping early may lead to a recurrence of the infection.
- Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens after 7 days of treatment. Report any fluid in the ear after completing the treatment.
