Indications
- Pimecrolimus is used to treat skin conditions like eczema.
- Eczema causes red, irritated, and itchy skin.
- Pimecrolimus changes the skin’s defense system to decrease allergic reactions.
- Belongs to a class of drugs called topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs).
- Not recommended for those with a history of Netherton’s syndrome.
- Should not be used by people with weakened immune systems.
Dosage and administration
- Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before using pimecrolimus.
- Wash your hands with soap and water before using this medication.
- Apply a thin layer to the affected areas of skin as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily.
- Rub the medication into the skin gently and completely.
- Wash your hands after using, unless your hands are being treated.
- If recommended by your doctor, apply moisturizer after this medication.
- Pimecrolimus is for use on the skin only.
- Avoid contact with eyes, inside of nose or mouth.
- Do not apply to open wounds or infected areas.
- Do not cover treated area with plastic or waterproof bandages unless directed by your doctor.
- Do not bathe, shower, or swim immediately after applying.
- Use as directed by your doctor.
- Consult your doctor if condition does not improve after 6 weeks or worsens at any time.
Side effects
- Mild burning or irritation at application site during first few days of treatment possible.
- Headache may occur..
- If effects last or worsen, inform doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- Medication prescribed because benefits outweigh risks.
- Many users do not experience serious side effects.
- Contact doctor immediately for serious side effects, such as signs of infection or allergic reaction.
- Rare occurrence of serious allergic reaction, seek medical help immediately.

Precautions
- Allergic reactions may occur, so inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies.
- This product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions.
- Discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially current infections, use of light therapy, skin infections, and immune system problems.
- This medication can increase sensitivity to the sun. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing.
- Notify your doctor if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.
- Use this medication during pregnancy only if necessary and after discussing risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Consult your doctor before breastfeeding, as it is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk.
