Elmiron treats pain/discomfort related to interstitial cystitis, a specific bladder disorder.
Its mechanism involves forming a protective layer on the bladder wall, shielding it from harmful substances in the urine.
Elmiron has a mild anticoagulant effect, increasing the risk of bruising and bleeding, including nose and gum bleeding.
Dosage and administration
Read the Medication Guide from your pharmacist before starting pentosan polysulfate sodium and review it with each refill. Direct any questions to your doctor or pharmacist.
Take this medication orally, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals, as prescribed by your doctor—usually, three times a day.
Use the medication regularly for optimal benefits. Establish a routine by taking it at the same time daily.
Do not exceed the prescribed dose or take it more frequently or for a longer duration than advised. This won’t expedite improvement and increases the risk of side effects.
Inform your doctor if your condition doesn’t improve or worsens after 3 months.
Side effects
