Indications
- Levetiracetam is used to treat seizures, belonging to the class of anticonvulsant drugs.
- It aims to decrease the number of seizures experienced by the individual.
Dosage and administration
- Read the Medication Guide and Patient Information Leaflet before starting levetiracetam and with each refill. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for any questions.
- Take the liquid and regular-release tablets by mouth, usually twice daily, with or without food. Avoid crushing or chewing the tablet to prevent a bitter taste.
- Measure the liquid form with a special device/spoon; avoid using a household spoon. Extended-release tablets are taken once daily, swallowed whole without crushing or chewing.
- Dosage is determined by medical condition and response. Children’s dosage is weight-based. To minimize side effects, the doctor may start with a low dose and gradually increase it.
- Take the medication regularly at the same times each day. Do not exceed the prescribed dose or duration.
- Do not stop the medication without consulting your doctor, as abruptly discontinuing may worsen seizures. Dose reduction should be gradual.
- Inform your doctor of any changes in seizure frequency, duration, or worsening of symptoms.
Side effects
- Common side effects during the first 4 weeks may include drowsiness, dizziness, unusual tiredness, or weakness. These effects typically diminish as the body adjusts.
- The medication is prescribed because its benefits outweigh the risk of side effects. Serious side effects are uncommon.
- Notify your doctor immediately if you experience loss of coordination, mental/mood changes, signs of infection, signs of anemia, or easy bruising/bleeding.
- Some individuals taking anticonvulsants may encounter depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, or other mental/mood issues. Report any sudden/unusual changes in mood, thoughts, or behavior.
- Levetiracetam may cause a rash, which is usually not serious but should be reported to the doctor to rule out a severe reaction.
- Seek immediate medical help if you observe symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
- This is not an exhaustive list of potential side effects. Contact your doctor or pharmacist for any other observed effects.
Precautions
- Inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies to levetiracetam or other substances, as inactive ingredients may cause allergic reactions.
- Share your medical history, particularly kidney disease (including dialysis treatment) and mental/mood disorders like depression, with your doctor or pharmacist.
- The drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness, especially in the first month. Avoid activities requiring alertness, and limit alcohol or marijuana use, consulting your doctor if using marijuana.
- Before surgery, inform your healthcare provider about all the products you use, including prescriptions, non-prescriptions, and herbal products.
- Children, especially those under 4 years, may be more sensitive to mental/mood changes. They might also be at a higher risk of increased blood pressure (refer to Notes section).
- Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects, increasing the risk of falling, particularly drowsiness, dizziness, or loss of coordination.
- During pregnancy, use the medication only if necessary, discussing the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- Consult your doctor before breastfeeding, as the medication passes into breast milk.
