Indications
- Megestrol is used to treat breast or uterine cancer.
- It is similar to a natural substance produced by the body called progesterone.
Dosage and administration
- Take this medication orally as directed by your doctor.
- The dosage and frequency of administration depend on your medical condition and response to treatment. Adhere closely to your doctor’s instructions.
- Use this medication regularly to maximize its benefits. Take it at the same time(s) each day to aid in remembering.
- Do not increase your dose or use the medication more frequently or for longer than prescribed. Doing so will not expedite improvement and may increase the risk of side effects.
- As this drug can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should avoid handling this medication or inhaling dust from the tablets.
Side effects
- Trouble sleeping, fever, gas, decreased sexual ability/desire, weight gain, changes in appetite, or upset stomach may occur while taking this medication. Women may experience changes in their menstrual periods, including unpredictable bleeding. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- This medication has been prescribed because your doctor has determined that the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects for you. Many individuals using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
- Notify your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects, such as fast/pounding heartbeat, tiredness, headache, or swelling of the hands/feet.
- This medication may rarely elevate your blood sugar levels, potentially causing or exacerbating diabetes. Inform your doctor promptly if you develop symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst/urination. If you already have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed and share the results with your doctor. Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise regimen, or diet.
- Seek medical assistance immediately if you experience very serious side effects, including symptoms of a blood clot (such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, pain/redness/swelling of arms or legs), confusion, mental/mood changes, weakness/numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, or vision changes.
- Severe allergic reactions to this drug are rare but require immediate medical attention. Seek medical help if you observe symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Precautions
- Before taking megestrol, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues. Consult your pharmacist for more details.
- Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have adrenal gland problems (such as Cushing’s syndrome), blood clots, diabetes, heart disease (such as heart failure), high blood pressure, kidney disease, stomach or abdominal problems, or experience unusual vaginal bleeding.
- If you have diabetes, this medication may affect your blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar regularly as directed and inform your doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar (refer to the Side Effects section). Your doctor may need to adjust your diabetes medication, exercise regimen, or diet.
- Prolonged use of megestrol may make it more challenging for your body to respond to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery or emergency treatment, or if you experience a serious illness/injury, inform your doctor or dentist that you are using this medication or have recently discontinued it. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop unusual/extreme tiredness, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting.
- Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly the risk for blood clots.
- Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Avoid pregnancy while using megestrol, as it may harm an unborn baby. Your doctor should perform a pregnancy test before initiating this medication. Inquire about reliable forms of birth control while using this medication. If you become pregnant, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor promptly.
- As this drug can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and may harm an unborn baby, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should refrain from handling this medication or inhaling dust from the tablets.
- This medication passes into breast milk. Due to the potential risk to the infant, breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
