Indications
- Telmisartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), aiding in the prevention of strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
- Belonging to a class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), telmisartan works by relaxing blood vessels, facilitating easier blood flow.
Dosage and administration
- Before starting telmisartan, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take this medication orally, with or without food, as directed by your doctor, usually once daily.
- Dosage is determined by your medical condition and response to treatment.
- Use this medication regularly for optimal benefits. Take it at the same time each day to help remember. Even if you feel well, continue taking it as prescribed, as most people with high blood pressure do not experience symptoms. It may take up to 4 weeks to see the full effects of the drug in treating high blood pressure.
- Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase.
Side effects
- Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur as your body adjusts to telmisartan. If these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- To minimize the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, rise slowly when transitioning from a sitting or lying position.
- This medication has been prescribed because your doctor has determined that the benefits outweigh the risks for you. Many individuals using telmisartan do not experience serious side effects.
- Inform your doctor immediately if you experience serious side effects, such as fainting or symptoms of high potassium levels (such as muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat).
- While telmisartan may be utilized to prevent or treat kidney problems, it may rarely cause or exacerbate serious kidney issues. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function during treatment. Notify your doctor promptly if you observe any signs of kidney problems, such as changes in urine output.
- Severe allergic reactions to this medication are rare but require immediate medical attention. Seek medical help if you develop symptoms such as rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
- This list does not encompass all possible side effects. If you notice any other effects not mentioned here, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
