Indications
- Memantine is prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe confusion (dementia) associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
- While it does not cure Alzheimer’s disease, memantine has the potential to enhance memory, awareness, and the capacity to carry out daily activities.
- The medication operates by inhibiting the action of a specific natural substance in the brain known as glutamate, which is thought to be connected to Alzheimer’s disease symptoms.
Dosage and administration
- Before commencing memantine, review the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist, if available, and each time you refill your prescription. Any queries should be directed to your doctor or pharmacist.
- Administer this medication orally as instructed by your doctor, with or without food, typically twice daily. Dosage is contingent upon your medical condition and response to treatment. Initially, you may take it once daily. To minimize side effects, your doctor may advise starting at a low dose and gradually increasing it. Adhere closely to your doctor’s directives.
- If using memantine oral liquid, refer to the manufacturer’s instruction sheet accompanying the bottle and follow the directions precisely. Utilize the oral syringe provided with the product to measure your dose accurately. Avoid using a household spoon as it may lead to incorrect dosing. Ingest the medication directly from the syringe without mixing it with water or other liquids. Clean the syringe with water after each use. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for any inquiries.
- Maintain regular usage of this medication to derive maximum benefits. Establish a routine by taking it at the same time(s) daily to aid in remembering.
- Inform your doctor if your condition deteriorates.
