Indications
- Naproxen is prescribed to alleviate pain associated with various conditions such as headaches, muscle aches, tendonitis, dental pain, and menstrual cramps.
- It is effective in reducing pain, swelling, and joint stiffness caused by arthritis, bursitis, and gout attacks.
- Classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), naproxen operates by inhibiting the body’s production of specific natural substances responsible for inflammation.
- For chronic conditions like arthritis, it is advisable to consult a doctor about non-drug treatments or alternative medications for pain management.
- Prior to usage, it’s essential to check the ingredients listed on the label, even if they have been previously used, as manufacturers may have altered them. Similar product names may contain different ingredients for distinct purposes, and consuming the wrong product could pose risks.
Dosage and administration
- When taking the over-the-counter version of naproxen, carefully read all directions on the product package prior to consumption.
- If prescribed by a doctor, refer to the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before initiating naproxen intake and upon each refill. If you have any questions, please direct them to your doctor or pharmacist.
- Administer this medication orally as instructed by your doctor, typically 2 or 3 times daily with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters). Avoid lying down for at least 10 minutes after ingestion. To mitigate stomach upset, consume naproxen with food, milk, or an antacid.
- Dosage is contingent upon your medical condition and response to treatment. To minimize the risk of stomach bleeding and other adverse effects, consume naproxen at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible. Do not augment your dose or take this medication more frequently than prescribed by your doctor or as indicated on the package label. For persistent conditions like arthritis, adhere to your doctor’s instructions regarding continued medication use.
- For certain conditions, such as arthritis, it might take up to two weeks of consistent naproxen intake before the full therapeutic benefits are experienced.
- If taking this medication “as needed” (not on a regular schedule), it’s important to note that pain medications are most effective when utilized at the onset of pain. Delaying until pain intensifies may diminish the medication’s efficacy.
- Should your condition persist, worsen, or if you suspect a serious medical issue, seek immediate medical assistance. If utilizing the nonprescription variant to address fever, consult a doctor promptly if the fever exacerbates or persists beyond 3 days.
Side effects
- Common side effects of naproxen may include upset stomach, nausea, heartburn, headache, drowsiness, or dizziness. Inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly if any of these effects persist or worsen.
- If your doctor has prescribed this medication, it’s because they have determined that the benefits outweigh the risks of potential side effects. Many individuals using naproxen do not experience serious adverse effects.
- Naproxen may elevate your blood pressure. Monitor your blood pressure regularly and inform your doctor if the results indicate high readings.
- Promptly notify your doctor of any serious side effects, including easy bruising/bleeding, difficult/painful swallowing, changes in hearing (such as ringing in the ears), alterations in mental/mood, signs of kidney issues (like changes in urine output), unexplained stiff neck, changes in vision, or symptoms suggestive of heart failure (such as swollen ankles/feet, unusual fatigue, sudden or unusual weight gain).
- Rarely, this medication may induce serious, potentially fatal liver disease. Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience symptoms such as persistent nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes/skin, or dark urine.
- Although very uncommon, a severe allergic reaction to naproxen may occur. Seek medical attention immediately if you observe symptoms like fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (particularly of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
- This list does not encompass all possible side effects. If you notice any other effects not mentioned above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Precautions
- Before taking naproxen, disclose to your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, aspirin, or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and celecoxib) or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications. Seek advice from your pharmacist for further information.
- Prior to using this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, especially if you have asthma, aspirin-sensitive asthma (a history of worsened breathing with runny/stuffy nose after aspirin or NSAID intake), blood disorders (like anemia), bleeding/clotting problems, nasal polyps, heart disease (including previous heart attack), high blood pressure, liver disease, stroke, swelling (edema), stomach/intestinal/esophagus issues (such as bleeding, heartburn, ulcers).
- Kidney problems may arise with NSAID medication usage, including naproxen. The risk increases if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or if you take certain medications. Consume plenty of fluids as directed by your doctor to prevent dehydration, and promptly inform your doctor of any urine output changes.
- This medication can induce dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) may exacerbate these effects. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely. Consult your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
- Naproxen may cause stomach bleeding. Regular alcohol and tobacco use, particularly when combined with this medication, may heighten the risk of stomach bleeding. Limit alcohol intake and cease smoking. Consult your doctor or pharmacist regarding safe alcohol consumption levels.
- This medication may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience sunburn or skin redness/blistering.
- Some naproxen products contain sodium. Inform your doctor if you are on a salt-restricted diet.
- Prior to surgery, disclose all products you use, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products, to your doctor or dentist.
- Older adults may face increased risks of stomach/intestinal bleeding, kidney problems, heart attack, and stroke while using this medication.
- Women of childbearing age should discuss the benefits and risks of this medication with their doctor(s). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Naproxen may harm an unborn baby and complicate normal labor/delivery. It is not recommended during pregnancy from 20 weeks until delivery. If necessary, between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Avoid using this medication after 30 weeks of pregnancy.
- Naproxen passes into breast milk and may have adverse effects on nursing infants. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
