Remove the ring from the reclosable foil pouch, keeping the pouch for later disposal of the used ring. Fold the ring in half and gently insert it into your vagina as directed until it feels comfortable. While some women may be aware of the presence of the ring in the vagina, most do not feel it once it’s in place. It will not interfere with sexual intercourse, although your partner may be able to feel it. The exact position of the ring within the vagina does not affect its effectiveness. Keep the ring in place for 3 weeks continuously.
• If you’re using the ring for the first time, utilize a backup form of non-hormonal birth control (such as condoms or spermicide) for the initial 7 days to prevent pregnancy until the ring becomes effective. Do not use a diaphragm, female condom, or cervical cap for backup birth control, as they may interfere with proper placement. If you start using the ring on the first day of your period, backup birth control is not necessary for the first week.

Side effects

• Possible side effects of using the vaginal ring may include vaginal discomfort or irritation, nausea, vomiting, headache, bloating, breast tenderness, swelling of the ankles or feet due to fluid retention, or weight changes. Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) may also occur, particularly during the initial months of use. Should any of these effects persist or worsen, promptly inform your doctor or pharmacist.
