Indications
- Apremilast is prescribed to treat a specific type of arthritis known as psoriatic arthritis.
- It is also used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, a certain type of skin condition.
- Apremilast belongs to a class of drugs referred to as phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitors.
- It reduces pain and swelling while potentially enhancing flexibility in the affected joints in the treatment of psoriatic arthritis.
- Apremilast may diminish the redness, thickening, and scaling of the skin associated with plaque psoriasis.
- Additionally, apremilast is employed to address mouth sores in individuals with Behcet’s disease, aiming to alleviate pain and facilitate the healing process of these mouth ulcers.
Dosage and administration
- Take this medication orally with or without food as prescribed by your doctor, typically twice daily.
- The manufacturer advises against crushing, splitting, or chewing the tablet before ingestion. However, some similar drugs in immediate-release tablet form can be crushed, split, or chewed. Follow your doctor’s guidance on how to administer this medication.
- Dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To minimize the risk of side effects, your doctor may initiate treatment with a low dose and gradually increase it. Adhere closely to your doctor’s instructions.
- Use this medication regularly to derive the maximum benefit from it. To aid in remembering, take it at the same time each day.
- Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
Side effects
- Common side effects of this medication may include diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, loss of appetite, headache, or weight loss. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
- Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has determined that the benefit to you outweighs the risk of side effects. Many individuals using this medication do not experience serious side effects.
- Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any serious side effects, including severe nausea/vomiting/diarrhea.
- Rarely, individuals taking this medication may encounter depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, or other mental/mood issues. Inform your doctor right away if you or your family/caregiver notice any unusual or sudden changes in your mood, thoughts, or behaviour, including signs of depression, suicidal thoughts/attempts, or thoughts about harming yourself.
- While very rare, a serious allergic reaction to this drug can occur. Seek medical assistance immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.

Precautions
