Pentasa Uses
Pentasa (mesalamine), in adults, it’s used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Inflammation, ulcers, and sores in the colon that cause bleeding, stomach discomfort, and diarrhea are seen in people with ulcerative colitis.
It works by affecting substances in the body that cause inflammation, damage to tissues, and diarrhea.
Pentasa Crohn Disease
Off-label, this drug is commonly used to treat Crohn’s disease. This drug has been found to be highly helpful at alleviating symptoms. Consult your doctor before using this medicine for Chron’s disease off-label.
Pentasa vs Lialda
Lialda and Pentasa are amino-salicylate anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat ulcerative colitis and prevent recurrence of symptoms.
Pentasa vs Asacol
Pentasa and Asacol are both forms of mesalamine. What makes them different is the outer coating. Pentasa is better for patients with Chron’s with inflammation in the small intestine. Asacol is commonly released in the colon, so it is commonly better for patients with colitis only, but not illness in the small intestine.
Pentasa Dosage
Adults should take 1 g 4 times a day for a total daily dosage of 4 g for induction of remission and symptomatic management of mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis. In controlled trials, treatment lasted up to 8 weeks.
Dose: 2 x 500-mg capsules
Above are just the most recommended doses, therefore be sure to follow the dosage instructions and guidelines given to you by your doctor. Do not change doses without consulting your doctor. If you have questions about dosage and usage, speak to your doctor.
