Indications
- Qvar inhaler is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma in adults and children aged 5 years and older.
- It is prescribed to help prevent asthma symptoms and improve lung function in individuals with persistent asthma.
- Qvar inhaler may also be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to reduce the need for oral corticosteroids in patients with severe asthma.
Dosage and administration
- The recommended dosage of Qvar inhaler depends on the severity of asthma and the patient’s age.
- For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older, the usual starting dosage is 40 to 80 micrograms (mcg) administered twice daily.
- For children aged 5 to 11 years, the usual starting dosage is 40 mcg administered twice daily.
- The dosage may be adjusted based on the individual’s asthma control and response to treatment, as determined by a healthcare provider.
- Qvar inhaler should be used regularly to achieve optimal asthma control, even if no symptoms are present.
- Administer each dose by inhalation, holding the inhaler upright and shaking it well before each use.
- Exhale fully, place the mouthpiece between the lips, and inhale deeply while simultaneously pressing down on the canister to release the medication.
- Hold your breath for 5 to 10 seconds before exhaling slowly.
- Rinse your mouth with water after each use to help reduce the risk of oral thrush.
- If using other inhaled medications, administer Qvar inhaler last to ensure proper delivery of each medication.
- Keep track of the number of doses used to monitor medication adherence and replace the inhaler when the dose counter indicates zero.
Side effects
- Common side effects of Qvar inhaler may include throat irritation, coughing, or hoarseness.
- Some individuals may experience headache, nasal congestion, or sinus irritation while using Qvar inhaler.
- Qvar inhaler may cause oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth) as a potential side effect, especially if proper mouth rinsing is not performed after each use.
- Other potential side effects include increased heart rate, tremor, or palpitations.
- In rare cases, Qvar inhaler may lead to more serious side effects such as allergic reactions, including rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
- Patients should promptly report any unusual or severe side effects to their healthcare provider.
Precautions
- Inform your healthcare provider about any history of tuberculosis, fungal infections, or other respiratory conditions before using Qvar inhaler.
- Use caution when using Qvar inhaler if you have a history of osteoporosis, as corticosteroids may increase the risk of bone loss.
- Discuss with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before using Qvar inhaler, as the safety of the medication during pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
- Be aware that Qvar inhaler may increase the risk of thrush in the mouth and throat, so rinse your mouth with water after each use to help prevent this side effect.
- If you experience symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest tightness after using Qvar inhaler, seek immediate medical attention.
- Keep Qvar inhaler out of reach of children and pets and store it at room temperature away from moisture and heat sources.
