Indications
- Reglan is indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders.
- It is prescribed to help alleviate symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and delayed gastric emptying.
- Reglan may also be used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy or surgery.
Dosage and administration
- The usual dosage of Reglan for adults is 10 mg orally four times daily, approximately 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime.
- The dosage may be adjusted based on individual response and tolerability, up to a maximum of 40 mg per day.
- For the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy or surgery, Reglan is typically administered as a single dose of 10 mg, 30 minutes before the start of chemotherapy or surgery.
- Reglan may also be administered intravenously (IV) in hospitalized patients for the treatment of gastroparesis or when oral administration is not feasible.
- It is important to take Reglan exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or frequency of administration.
- If a dose of Reglan is missed, take it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule.
- Do not abruptly stop taking Reglan without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms.
Side effects
- Common side effects of Reglan may include drowsiness, fatigue, or headache.
- Some individuals may experience gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea while taking Reglan.
- Reglan may cause restlessness, agitation, or anxiety as potential side effects.
- Other potential side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, or increased thirst.
- In rare cases, Reglan may lead to more serious side effects such as tardive dyskinesia (involuntary muscle movements), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a potentially life-threatening reaction), or serotonin syndrome (an excess of serotonin in the body).
- If you experience severe or persistent side effects while taking Reglan, consult your healthcare provider promptly.
Precautions
- Inform your healthcare provider about any history of kidney problems, liver disease, or mental health conditions before starting Reglan.
- Use caution when taking Reglan if you have a history of Parkinson’s disease, as it may worsen symptoms of this condition.
- Discuss with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before using Reglan, as the safety of the medication during pregnancy and lactation has not been established.
- Be aware that Reglan may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
- Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Reglan, as it may increase the risk of side effects such as drowsiness or dizziness.
- If you experience symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, such as involuntary muscle movements, while taking Reglan, notify your healthcare provider immediately.
- Keep Reglan out of reach of children and pets and store it at room temperature away from moisture and heat sources.
