Indications
- Toprol XL is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).
- It is prescribed to help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of complications associated with hypertension, such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.
- Toprol XL may also be used to treat angina (chest pain) and heart failure, helping to improve symptoms and reduce the risk of hospitalization.
Dosage and administration
- The usual starting dose of Toprol XL for hypertension is 25 to 100 milligrams (mg) once daily.
- Depending on the patient’s response and blood pressure control, the dosage may be increased up to a maximum of 400 mg per day.
- For the treatment of angina or heart failure, the initial dose of Toprol XL may be lower, typically starting at 25 to 50 mg once daily.
- Toprol XL should be taken orally with or without food, at the same time each day.
- Swallow the extended-release tablet whole, without crushing or chewing, with a full glass of water.
- Do not suddenly stop taking Toprol XL without consulting your healthcare provider, as it may worsen your condition. If discontinuation is necessary, it should be done gradually under medical supervision.
- If a dose of Toprol XL is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In such cases, the missed dose should be skipped, and the regular dosing schedule resumed.
- Patients should follow the dosage instructions provided by their healthcare provider and not adjust the dose without consulting them first.
