Indications
- Vasotec is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) in adults and pediatric patients over 1 month old.
- It is prescribed to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, such as stroke or heart attack, in hypertensive patients.
- Vasotec may also be used to improve survival and reduce the risk of heart failure progression in patients with left ventricular dysfunction or congestive heart failure.
Dosage and administration
- The dosage of Vasotec depends on the patient’s medical condition, response to treatment, and kidney function.
- For hypertension, the usual starting dose of Vasotec for adults is 5 mg once daily, which may be increased to a maximum of 40 mg per day in divided doses, based on blood pressure response.
- For heart failure, the initial dose of Vasotec is usually 2.5 mg once daily, which may be titrated up to a maximum of 40 mg per day in divided doses, based on tolerance and response.
- Pediatric dosing for hypertension is based on weight, with an initial dose of 0.08 to 0.6 mg per kilogram of body weight once daily, up to a maximum of 40 mg per day.
- Vasotec is usually taken orally, with or without food.
- Patients with kidney impairment may require dosage adjustments, so it is important to follow the healthcare provider’s instructions closely.
- It may take several weeks for Vasotec to reach its full effect, so continue taking it as directed even if you feel well.
- If a dose of Vasotec is missed, take it as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dosing schedule.
- Do not stop taking Vasotec without consulting your healthcare provider, even if you feel better. Stopping suddenly may worsen your condition.
- If you have any questions or concerns about the dosage or administration of Vasotec, consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist for guidance.
Side effects
- Common side effects of Vasotec may include dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting, especially when standing up from a sitting or lying position.
- Some individuals may experience a dry cough, which usually resolves after discontinuing Vasotec.
- Vasotec may also lead to tiredness, weakness, or headache in some patients.
- It can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, particularly when first starting the medication.
- Rarely, Vasotec may lead to allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any persistent or severe side effects while taking Vasotec.
Precautions
- Inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, especially kidney disease, liver disease, or heart problems, before taking Vasotec.
- Let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as Vasotec may harm the fetus or pass into breast milk.
- Inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of allergies to medications, especially to other ACE inhibitors, as Vasotec may cause allergic reactions.
- Use caution when taking Vasotec if you have a history of angioedema (swelling of the deeper layers of the skin), as it may increase the risk of angioedema recurrence.
- Monitor for signs of electrolyte imbalances, such as hyperkalemia (high potassium levels) or hyponatremia (low sodium levels), while taking Vasotec, especially in patients with kidney impairment.
- Avoid using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without consulting your healthcare provider, as they may increase potassium levels when taken with Vasotec.
- Keep Vasotec out of reach of children and pets and store it at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
- Follow up with your healthcare provider regularly to monitor your blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels while taking Vasotec.
