Ortho Cyclen is a specific formulation of birth control pills that come in a twenty-one day package. These birth control pills are used for the prevention of pregnancy. Ortho Cyclen works by using female hormones (norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol) to change the mucus of the cervix in order to make it more difficult for sperm to contact the egg and for an egg to attach to the wall of the uterus.

How should I take Ortho Cyclen 21 day/Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate ?

Ortho Cyclen pills are a form of prescription medicine, and should be taken in the exact fashion outlined in your prescription to effectively work as a contraceptive. If your prescription is unclear, contact your healthcare provider for clarification. Ortho Cyclen comes in a twenty-one day pack. Your doctor will advise you to either start taking pills on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts. You will continue to take one pill each day for three weeks and then have a pill-free week. Ortho Cyclen pills are generally recommended to be taken at the same time each day in order to help you remember. If you miss one pill, you will increase your risk of becoming pregnant, and at that point it is extremely important to follow the directions on your prescription regarding missed pills. When should Ortho Cyclen 21 day /Ethinyl Estradiol/Norgestimate not be taken?

If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Ortho Cyclen, do not use this form of birth control. If you have: liver disease or cancer; a hormone related cancer; a history of stroke or circulation problems; blood clotting problems; abnormal vaginal bleeding; migraine headaches; or a history of jaundice, taking Ortho Cyclen is not recommended. Women who are pregnant or suspect that they may be pregnant should not take Ortho Cyclen in any circumstance. Women who are currently breastfeeding should not use Ortho Cyclen as it passes into breast milk and may have negative effects on a young child.

Although Ortho Cyclen is an effective contraception, it does not provide protection for sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV/AIDS. For protection against these, use latex condoms.
